2024 Conifer Introductions

In 2024 the big project planned was the establishment of a conifer collection, which includes well over 100 unique forms. Representatives from 10 genera and 41 species will make up this inspiring display of pyramids, globes, cones, cushions, weepers, and more ranging in color from many different shades of green to yellow, white, blues, purples, and reds.

A hillside was selected for the conifer collection site that is centrally located in the arbor trail system. This site has good sun exposure with some existing trees providing protection from the west winds. The slope of the hill provides good drainage and varying perspective for the visitor.

The first step was removing the existing unwanted trees. These were mostly small Green Ash, Boxelder, and Eastern Red Cedar. Once the trees were cleared, rocks of various sizes were moved in. Site preparation began in 2023.

Site Preparation – Gathering Rocks

The first round of plants came in the spring of 2024. Since the area was not ready, they were staged in a fenced in area with mulch around the pots to keep the roots cool and moist.

Evergreens staged and waiting to be planted

Many larger rocks were used, which required digging and driving with heavy machinery.

Rock placement in progress

Once the rocks were placed, a 7.5′ high fence was put up to keep the deer out.

The black net fence is barely visible

The rocks and fence are in place. The site is ready to be planted.

Pots are placed in position prior to being dug in.

Various views immediately after planting is complete.

With fall came the dropping of pine needles from mature white pines in the area. These were raked up and used as mulch around the plantings. Here is a gallery showing the finished work. The needles really make the conifers and rocks stand out.

First snow fall.

Burlap added on some of the more winter-sensitive species:

Rocks have been gathered for phase 2 which will be done in 2025.
