While there are many species of conifers planted or naturally occurring as specimens – such as Eastern White Pine, Norway Spruce, Eastern Larch, etc. – the conifer collection consists of specialty named cultivars. These cultivars have been selected and propagated for specific traits. Some may be pendulous while others are creeping, others may be especially blue or yellow colored, yet others are unusually compact or dwarfed.
There are over 100 varieties in the collection as of 2024. Most of these have been planted together to make a display on a hillside. This allows them to be compared and contrasted with each other. Critically, this area has been fenced in to keep the plants safe from the deer – another advantage of the collection being grouped together.
